Why Choose Rudi Electrics for EV Charger Installation Wood Green?

Your concerns answered — here’s why Wood Green EV drivers trust us for home charging installations.

EV Charger Installation in Wood Green N22

Wood Green N22 has a mix of Victorian terraces, 1930s semis around Noel Park, and new build flat developments near the High Road. EV charger installation is most straightforward on properties with off-street parking — and we're seeing strong demand across the semi-detached streets around Lordship Lane and Wolves Lane where driveways are common. For flat owners without private parking, we can advise on community charging options.

Wood Green's regeneration around Heartlands has brought a new generation of EV-ready residents to the area. As fully qualified electricians, we cover all of N22 — from the Victorian terraces off the High Road to the newer apartment blocks near the tube. We cover Wood Green as part of our wider EV charger installation service across North London. For other electrical work in Wood Green, see our electrician Wood Green page.

EV charger installs in Wood Green often pair with related electrical work — we check your consumer unit in Wood Green handles the load (fuse upgrade or load-balancing where needed), run home network and Wi-Fi in Wood Green cabling for app-based charging, integrate with your smart home setup in Wood Green for tariff-aware scheduling, and where the charger sits inside a garage or shed we handle the shed and outbuilding electrics in Wood Green at the same time.

EV Charger Installation Wood Green — Frequently Asked Questions

Clear answers to the most common questions homeowners ask about EV charger installation, smart charging, and home charging solutions in Wood Green.

What does an EV charger installation cost in Wood Green? Why are quotes so different?

Our Wood Green pricing:

  • Standard 7kW smart charger install: £1,499 (cable run up to 15m, full certification, supply check)
  • Premium 7kW install: £1,799 (advanced features — solar diversion, dynamic load balancing, cable run up to 25m)

Why nationwide quotes vary so wildly: prices range £800-£1,500+. A £800 quote usually means basic charger, no smart features, install up to 5-7m, no isolator at the meter end, and no Wi-Fi/4G configuration. Our £1,499 standard includes:

  • Quality 7kW smart charger from a major brand (BG Sync EV, Wallbox, Hypervolt, Ohme, Zappi or Tesla — your choice)
  • All cable, RCBO at the consumer unit, Type B RCD, isolator at the meter end
  • Up to 15m cable run (interior or exterior)
  • App configuration with your phone and energy tariff
  • Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Building Regs Part P notification

What CAN add cost: cable runs over 15m, underground cable across a driveway (£200-£500 groundworks), consumer unit upgrade if yours is full or older (from £800), three-phase supply upgrade if you want 22kW (£1,500-£5,500 — usually we don't recommend). We tell you upfront, never sprung mid-install.

Should I get a 7kW or 22kW EV charger? What's the difference?

For 99% of UK homes, the answer is 7kW.

7kW charger:

  • Standard UK domestic single-phase supply (what nearly every home has)
  • Charges a typical EV from 20% to 80% overnight (8-10 hours)
  • £1,499 standard install
  • Compatible with all current UK EVs

22kW charger:

  • Requires three-phase electricity supply (rare in UK domestic — typically commercial or large detached)
  • Charges roughly 3x faster than 7kW (2-4 hours overnight charge)
  • Three-phase supply upgrade: £1,500-£5,500 from your DNO if your house doesn't already have it
  • Most domestic EVs only accept up to 7-11kW AC charging anyway — paying for 22kW capability is wasted on a 7kW car

Realistically: unless you have three-phase supply already (very unlikely in Wood Green) and an EV that accepts 22kW (rare on the consumer market), stick with 7kW. The difference between "fully charged in 4 hours" and "fully charged in 8 hours" overnight is irrelevant — both finish before you wake up.

Tethered or untethered? And will the charger work with my EV (Type 2)?

Two questions, both important.

Tethered (cable permanently attached):

  • Pros: plug-and-go, no faffing with the cable, harder to steal
  • Cons: fixed length, fixed connector type, replacing the cable means full charger swap

Untethered (socketed — bring your own cable):

  • Pros: any cable length, future-proof if you change EVs, slightly lower upfront cost
  • Cons: plug and unplug both ends every time, the cable is steal-able if left out

Compatibility: every charger we install is Type 2 — the universal connector for all UK EVs (Tesla, BMW, Audi, Polestar, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Volvo, Mercedes, MG, Nissan Leaf 2017+, etc.). Type 1 (older Japanese cars pre-2017) is exotic and rarely needed — we'll discuss if your car needs it.

For most homes we recommend tethered for the convenience. If you might change EVs in the next 5 years and want flexibility, go untethered. Install price is £1,499 either way — your call.

Which brand is best — Hypervolt, Ohme, Zappi, or Tesla?

Honest answer: depends on your setup. Here's the matrix:

  • Hypervolt: best balanced choice. Good design, solid app, dynamic load balancing if your supply is borderline, decent solar integration. Most popular on our installs.
  • Ohme: best for Octopus customers. Free 4G connectivity if you stay with Octopus; their Intelligent Octopus tariff lets your car charge for under 10p/kWh by automatically slotting into cheap-power windows. Less optimised for solar.
  • Zappi (myenergi): best for solar panel owners. Eco-modes divert excess solar generation directly to your EV battery — effectively free charging during daylight. Industry leader for solar integration but pricier.
  • Tesla Wall Connector: if you're a Tesla owner or want the Tesla ecosystem. Sleek hardware. Less smart-tariff flexibility than Ohme/Zappi.
  • BG Sync EV / Wallbox: budget-friendly options. We install both — fine if smart features matter less to you.

We install all of these. No charger affiliations, no commission scheme. We'll recommend based on what your house, EV, and energy provider actually need — not what the manufacturer pays us for.

Will my fuse box and supply handle a 7kW charger, or do I need an upgrade?

Most Wood Green homes can handle a 7kW charger as-is. Two checks needed:

  1. Main fuse rating: your incoming supply (the round black or grey fuse next to the meter) needs to be 80A or 100A. Older homes sometimes have 60A — your DNO (UK Power Networks for north London) will upgrade it for free, typically within 4-8 weeks. We can apply on your behalf.
  2. Consumer unit capacity: we add one new 32A circuit for the EV charger. Your existing fuse box needs a spare way for this. If it's full, we add a small dedicated EV consumer unit beside it (£200-£300 add-on) or recommend a full consumer unit upgrade if yours is older anyway (from £800).

You do not need to rewire your house for a 7kW charger. Forums full of stories where people are scared into thinking they do — almost always not true.

What to send us before booking: a photo of your fuse box and your meter cabinet. We can usually tell you whether you need any supply or consumer unit work before we even visit your Wood Green property.

My driveway is far from my fuse box, I don't have a driveway, or the cable needs to go through a wall — can you still install?

Almost always yes. Cable run pricing:

  • Up to 15m (most homes): included in the £1,499 standard install
  • 15-25m: £50-£150 extra in cable
  • Through a cavity or solid wall: included if the wall is accessible (we drill, sleeve, and seal)
  • Underground (across a driveway): £200-£500 groundworks — we cut a channel, lay armoured cable, fill back. Most paving slabs we lift and re-lay; concrete or tarmac may need a mechanical cut.

No driveway / on-street parking only: this is where it gets tricky. Public-pavement EV charging requires local council permission and we don't fit pavement-mounted chargers. If you have a wall or post you can mount the charger on (in your garden boundary, not the public footpath), we can install for charging when the car is parked next to it — but you can't run a cable across the public pavement to charge a car parked on the road.

For flats and leaseholds in Wood Green: we install in private parking bays, but freeholder approval is usually required first. Send us your lease parking allocation and we'll advise.

How long does the install take, and will my power be off?

For a typical Wood Green install, allow 3-5 hours start to finish.

What happens during the visit:

  • We arrive, check the supply and fuse box, walk the cable route with you
  • Install isolator at the meter end (5 minutes of supply isolation)
  • Run the cable to the charger location (1-2 hours)
  • Connect a new RCBO at your consumer unit (15-30 minutes of full house isolation)
  • Mount and configure the charger, test everything, walk you through the app

Power isolation: about 30 minutes total across the install — done in two short stretches, both with 24 hours' notice. Fridge survives, Wi-Fi router survives. We'll tell you when each isolation is happening.

Same-day install in most cases. Underground cable runs or longer cable routes may extend to 5-6 hours but still finished in one day.

I've been quoted £1,499. What's included, and what could add to the price?

The £1,499 standard install includes:

  • A quality 7kW smart charger from a major brand (BG Sync EV, Hypervolt, Ohme, Zappi, Tesla, Wallbox — your choice)
  • Up to 15m of cable run
  • New RCBO at your consumer unit
  • Type B RCD (essential for EV charging — protects against DC leakage)
  • Isolator at the meter cabinet
  • Full Wi-Fi/4G configuration with your phone and chosen energy tariff
  • Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC) and Building Regs Part P notification
  • 3-year manufacturer warranty on the charger + 12-month installation warranty from us

What CAN add to the price (we tell you BEFORE we start, with a fixed quote):

  • Cable runs over 15m: £50-£150
  • Underground / through-driveway: £200-£500 groundworks
  • Consumer unit upgrade if yours is full or pre-2016: from £800
  • Three-phase supply upgrade for 22kW: £1,500-£5,500 (rarely needed)
  • Premium tier (£1,799): advanced solar/load-balancing features and cable up to 25m

What we never do: discover an issue mid-install and charge you for it without your sign-off first. No scope creep.

Plaster patching with bonding plaster around any wall penetrations is included. Painting and any decoration are a decorator's job, not ours.

Can you provide a chargepoint installer reference for my application?

Yes — once we complete your install, we provide a chargepoint installer reference number that some scheme applications require.

We don't handle applications, eligibility advice, or process any funding scheme on your behalf. Schemes and eligibility change regularly, so for the latest rules and to check whether your situation qualifies, we recommend the official source at gov.uk.

If you're unsure, check gov.uk first — then come back to us once you've confirmed what you need.

Will the EV charger work with solar panels or a home battery?

Yes — and which charger you pick matters here.

For solar-only homes:

  • Zappi (myenergi) is the industry leader. Its eco-modes divert excess solar generation directly into your EV battery — so on a sunny day you charge for free instead of exporting to grid for ~5p/kWh.
  • Hypervolt has decent solar integration but lacks Zappi's eco-mode sophistication.
  • Ohme works with solar but isn't optimised for it.

For solar + home battery (full home energy ecosystem):

  • Zappi + myenergi Libbi — works as a unified system
  • Tesla Powerwall + Tesla Wall Connector — same logic, Tesla ecosystem
  • Mixed setups (e.g., Hypervolt + GivEnergy battery) work but require more configuration

Don't have solar yet but planning to add it? Tell us during the Wood Green install — we'll wire the consumer unit so the battery and inverter slot in cleanly later. Costs a marginal amount upfront, much more if retrofitted after the install.

How does smart charging work? Can I charge cheap overnight on Octopus Go?

Yes — and it's one of the biggest reasons to install a smart charger.

Standard tariff EV charging: ~30p/kWh = £15-£20 to fully charge a typical EV.

Octopus Go / Intelligent Octopus: ~7p/kWh between 12:30am - 5:30am = £4-£6 for the same charge. Saving roughly £100-£200/month for daily commuters.

How smart charging delivers this:

  • The charger talks to your tariff provider (Octopus, EDF, Bulb, etc.)
  • You set "charge by 7am" in the app
  • The charger figures out the cheapest window and slots your charging into it automatically
  • You wake up to a full battery, charged at the cheap rate

Best charger for Octopus tariffs: Ohme Home Pro (real-time dispatch with Intelligent Octopus, free 4G if you go through Octopus).

Best alternative: Hypervolt with scheduled charging (works with any tariff, manual time-of-use setup).

We configure the charger and the app on the day of install. You don't need to be technical — we walk you through it.

Will the install damage my walls, driveway, or decoration?

Almost never anything significant. The install is contained to:

  • The meter cabinet (where we add an isolator)
  • A single cable run to the charger location (often along an existing wall line)
  • The wall where the charger mounts (one mounting bracket, four screws)

What we do:

  • Drill a small entry hole through walls where needed (sleeved and sealed)
  • Run cable along internal or external wall lines, secured with brackets or trunking
  • Mount the charger on a wall, fence post, or external surface

What we don't do:

  • Chase walls inside the house (cable runs along surfaces, not buried)
  • Lift floorboards (the install stays near the meter)
  • Disturb decoration outside the install path

Underground cable runs (across a driveway): we cut a small channel, lay armoured cable in conduit, refill, and re-lay paving where possible. Tarmac and concrete can show small repair lines.

Plaster patching with bonding plaster around any wall penetration is included; finishing coats and any re-decoration are a decorator's job, not ours.

Wood Green homes with the meter at the front and the driveway at the back sometimes need a longer cable run — we'll show you the route before we start.
