Breaker Is On but the Lights Are Not Working

An ON switch at the consumer unit only says the device has not disconnected. It does not prove electricity is reaching every point or returning through the neutral.

An open connection can leave the breaker looking normal

A loose or broken line or neutral at a rose, junction, fitting or consumer-unit termination can interrupt several lights without tripping the breaker. The last working and first dead fitting help define the search area.

Because neutral conductors can remain hazardous and borrowed neutrals may involve another circuit, opening ceiling points is not a safe homeowner check.

First decide whether the fault is one fitting or the circuit

One failed lamp points in a very different direction from an entire lighting circuit going dark. The state of the breaker, the number of affected fittings and the last change made are the safest useful clues before any competent testing begins.

Common causes worth testing—not guessing

These are possibilities that fit the symptom, not a remote diagnosis. More than one condition can exist at the same time.

    A failed lamp or LED driver

    A replaceable lamp, integral driver or transformer may fail while the rest of the lighting circuit remains healthy.

    A tripped protective device

    A lamp failure, damaged fitting, moisture or wiring fault can operate the MCB, RCBO or shared RCD.

    A loose neutral or line connection

    A failed connection at a rose, junction or fitting can remove power from several lights downstream.

    A switch or dimmer fault

    Worn contacts, incompatible LED dimming or a damaged switch can leave one fitting dead or cause flicker.

    Moisture or damaged wiring

    Outdoor fittings, bathrooms, loft junctions and recent drilling or alterations can introduce leakage or conductor damage.

What you can check without opening electrics

The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.

Check whether other lights work

Establish whether the problem is one lamp, one room, one floor or the whole property.

Look at the consumer unit

Observe the lighting breaker and RCD. Reset once only after switches are off and only when there are no danger signs.

Try a correct known-good lamp

Only where the fitting is designed for user lamp replacement, cool and undamaged. Match the lamp type and rating.

Note recent changes

Record a newly fitted light, dimmer, fan, loft work, leak or lamp failure. Timing often narrows the search.

Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.

A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.

When this becomes an urgent warning

Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:

  • Burning smell, heat or crackling at a switch or fitting
  • Visible arcing, smoke or melted plastic
  • Water entering a light fitting or ceiling electrical point
  • Repeated protective-device operation
  • Shock or tingling from switches, fittings or nearby metalwork

If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.
