Why Does a Fused Spur Keep Blowing?
A fuse that operates again after replacement is not asking for a bigger fuse. It is limiting current because the load or downstream circuit has a fault.

Repeated fuse operation means the cause remains
The connected appliance may be faulty or overloaded, the flex or downstream cable may be damaged, or the fused connection unit may have overheated. Never increase the fuse rating to make it hold.
Fixed appliances such as boilers, fans and outdoor supplies should be isolated and tested by competent people; a blown fuse is only the protective response.
02 / READ THE PATTERN
Follow the fault, not the nearest switch
If the same appliance causes trouble at another suitable socket, the appliance moves to the top of the list. If different appliances fail only at one socket, the accessory or its wiring becomes more likely. Neither observation authorises opening equipment.
Blows when equipment starts
The connected load or start-up condition is relevant.
FCU feels warm or smells
Leave the circuit off and seek urgent repair.
Blows with load switched off
Downstream wiring or the FCU may be faulty.
A larger fuse is not a stronger answer. It can simply let the cable lose the argument first.

These are possibilities that fit the symptom, not a remote diagnosis. More than one condition can exist at the same time.

Heating elements, motors, filters and damp internal parts can leak current to earth and operate an RCD or RCBO.

Crushed insulation, loose plug terminals and heat-damaged pins can create intermittent or immediate faults.

Several high-current appliances used together can exceed the circuit or protective-device capacity.

A damaged socket or spur
Loose or burnt connections can fail particularly when a higher load is connected.

A fixed-wiring fault
If the symptom remains after appliances are removed, the socket circuit or connected fixed equipment needs testing.

What you can check without opening electrics
The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.
Leave the suspect item unplugged
Do not keep trying an appliance that has caused a trip, smell, heat or visible damage.
Inspect without dismantling
Look at the plug, flex and appliance case for damage, moisture, scorching or crushed cable.
Reduce simultaneous loads
Switch off other high-current portable loads and note what was running when the trip occurred.
Record whether the fault follows
Tell the electrician whether the same item caused trouble elsewhere or other items fail only at one socket.
Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.
05 / USEFUL CLUES
What the timing and location can suggest
A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.
06 / DO NOT WAIT
When this becomes an urgent warning
Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:
- Burning smell, smoke or visible damage
- A hot plug, flex, socket or extension lead
- Water inside or around the appliance connection
- Shock or tingling from the appliance
- The protective device will not remain on after the appliance is unplugged
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.

How a qualified electrician finds the cause
Good fault finding divides the installation into smaller testable sections and follows evidence. Parts are replaced only after the likely cause has been demonstrated.
Prove which side owns the fault
Test the appliance and fixed circuit separately using suitable methods and equipment.
Measure insulation and leakage
Assess earth leakage or insulation deterioration under the relevant operating conditions.
Inspect load connections
Check plugs, sockets, spurs and terminations for damage and high resistance.
Retest under controlled load
Only after repair, verify that the circuit and protective devices operate correctly.

Can I fit a 13A fuse instead of a 3A fuse?
No. Use only the rating specified for the connected equipment and circuit design. Increasing it can remove necessary protection.
