Why Do Garden Lights Trip the RCD?

Garden lighting faults often wait for rain, darkness and maximum inconvenience. The wettest fitting is not always the only one that needs checking.

Water ingress is common, but the circuit must be divided and tested

Moisture inside fittings or joints, damaged cable, failed transformers and poor underground connections can leak current to earth. Switching sections separately and insulation testing locate the faulty branch without replacing every light at random.

Do not reconnect fittings one by one in wet conditions or open supposedly weatherproof joints while energised.

Common causes worth testing—not guessing

These are possibilities that fit the symptom, not a remote diagnosis. More than one condition can exist at the same time.

    Water inside a fitting or joint

    Failed seals, unsuitable enclosures and condensation can create leakage and corrosion.

    Garden tools, rodents, fixings, movement and poor routing can damage flex, SWA or other wiring systems.

    Pond pumps, lighting transformers, heaters and garden equipment can develop earth leakage.

What you can check without opening electrics

The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.

Keep wet equipment off

Do not touch, unplug or reset equipment while it or the surrounding area is wet.

Use normal isolators only

Switch off outdoor lighting, pumps or shed supplies using accessible dry controls; do not open enclosures.

Note the weather and sequence

Record whether the fault followed rain, gardening, a new fitting or one particular item switching on.

Check the house protection once

Observe the relevant RCD or RCBO. Do not repeatedly reset it while the outdoor circuit remains connected.

Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.

Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:

  • Water inside electrical equipment or an enclosure
  • Damaged, exposed or severed outdoor cable
  • Burning smell, heat, arcing or melted plastic
  • Shock or tingling from outdoor equipment or metalwork
  • A supply cable damaged by digging, cutting or impact

If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.
