Why Are Half the Sockets Not Working?
Patchy power is usually a map. Which sockets remain live, and where the dead group begins, can point toward a failed joint or interrupted branch.

01 / THE SHORT VERSION
A partial outage often means the circuit path is interrupted
When the protective device remains on but a group of sockets is dead, possibilities include a loose connection, failed fused spur, broken radial conductor or an open leg of a ring final circuit. Working sockets do not prove the whole circuit is healthy.
An open ring conductor can leave sockets apparently working while changing the circuit’s current-sharing and safety characteristics, so the result needs dead testing.
02 / READ THE PATTERN
A dead socket is a symptom, not the whole diagnosis
The useful dividing line is whether the protective device has operated, whether any sockets on the same circuit still work and whether the problem follows an appliance. Those observations separate a likely load problem from a failed accessory, open connection or fixed-wiring fault.
A neat extension area is dead
Look for an upstream fused spur.
Sockets alternate between live and dead
Alterations or multiple branches may complicate the path.
Working sockets get warm
Stop loading the circuit and seek urgent inspection.
“Some of them work” is useful information, not a certificate of health for the rest of the circuit.

Common causes worth testing—not guessing
These are possibilities that fit the symptom, not a remote diagnosis. More than one condition can exist at the same time.

A tripped MCB or RCBO
An overload, short circuit or leakage fault may have disconnected the socket circuit. A device that trips again is reporting an unresolved fault.

A faulty appliance or extension lead
A damaged flex, plug, heating element or internal appliance fault can make the problem appear to belong to the socket.

A loose or overheated connection
A poor line or neutral termination can interrupt sockets downstream and may produce heat, discolouration or an intermittent supply.

A failed fused spur
A blown fuse or damaged fused connection unit can remove power from an extension, garage, boiler or group of sockets.

An open circuit in the wiring
A broken conductor or failed joint can leave part or all of a radial or ring final circuit without a reliable supply.

What you can check without opening electrics
The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.
Check the consumer unit once
Look for a breaker or RCD that is visibly off or in a mid position. Do not keep resetting a device that will not remain on.
Unplug portable equipment
Remove plugs only from dry, cool and undamaged socket-outlets. Leave fixed equipment and electrical covers alone.
Compare nearby sockets
Use an ordinary known-working lamp only where the socket looks and smells normal. This is an observation, not proof that the wiring is safe.
Record the boundary
Note the last socket that works, the first that does not and whether a fused spur sits between them. This can shorten professional tracing.
Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.
05 / USEFUL CLUES
What the timing and location can suggest
A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.
06 / DO NOT WAIT
When this becomes an urgent warning
Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:
- Smoke, arcing, crackling or a burning smell
- A hot plug, socket, fused spur or surrounding wall
- Shock or tingling from an appliance or metalwork
- Water entering a socket or connected equipment
- A protective device that trips again after portable loads are removed
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.

Good fault finding divides the installation into smaller testable sections and follows evidence. Parts are replaced only after the likely cause has been demonstrated.
Separate load from circuit
Confirm whether the symptom follows an appliance or remains with the fixed installation.

Dead-test conductors
Use continuity and insulation-resistance testing to locate an open conductor, short or leakage path.
Repair and verify
Correct the cause, then confirm polarity, continuity, earth-fault loop conditions and protective-device operation as applicable.
