Why Are the Lights Not Working on One Circuit?
When one floor or group of lights goes dark, first establish whether the protective device operated or the circuit remains on but open somewhere.

01 / THE SHORT VERSION
A whole dead lighting circuit needs a circuit-level explanation
If the lighting MCB or RCBO has tripped, a failed lamp, fitting, moisture or wiring fault may have operated it. If the breaker remains on but every light on that circuit is dead, a lost supply or neutral connection becomes more likely.
Keep a torch available and do not work from steps in darkness. A reset that trips again ends the safe observation stage.

First decide whether the fault is one fitting or the circuit
One failed lamp points in a very different direction from an entire lighting circuit going dark. The state of the breaker, the number of affected fittings and the last change made are the safest useful clues before any competent testing begins.
Trip followed one lamp failing
Leave that fitting switched off.
Breaker on, all lights dead
A supply or neutral path needs tracing.
Only outdoor lights trigger it
Moisture becomes a strong clue.
The bulb that went pop may be the culprit, a witness, or simply badly timed. Testing decides which.

Common causes worth testing—not guessing
These are possibilities that fit the symptom, not a remote diagnosis. More than one condition can exist at the same time.

A failed lamp or LED driver
A replaceable lamp, integral driver or transformer may fail while the rest of the lighting circuit remains healthy.

A tripped protective device
A lamp failure, damaged fitting, moisture or wiring fault can operate the MCB, RCBO or shared RCD.

A loose neutral or line connection
A failed connection at a rose, junction or fitting can remove power from several lights downstream.

A switch or dimmer fault
Worn contacts, incompatible LED dimming or a damaged switch can leave one fitting dead or cause flicker.

Moisture or damaged wiring
Outdoor fittings, bathrooms, loft junctions and recent drilling or alterations can introduce leakage or conductor damage.

What you can check without opening electrics
The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.
Check whether other lights work
Establish whether the problem is one lamp, one room, one floor or the whole property.
Look at the consumer unit
Observe the lighting breaker and RCD. Reset once only after switches are off and only when there are no danger signs.
Try a correct known-good lamp
Only where the fitting is designed for user lamp replacement, cool and undamaged. Match the lamp type and rating.
Note recent changes
Record a newly fitted light, dimmer, fan, loft work, leak or lamp failure. Timing often narrows the search.
Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.
05 / USEFUL CLUES
What the timing and location can suggest
A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.
06 / DO NOT WAIT
When this becomes an urgent warning
Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:
- Burning smell, heat or crackling at a switch or fitting
- Visible arcing, smoke or melted plastic
- Water entering a light fitting or ceiling electrical point
- Repeated protective-device operation
- Shock or tingling from switches, fittings or nearby metalwork
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.

Use continuity, insulation resistance and polarity checks appropriate to the circuit.
Verify the repair
Confirm every affected point operates correctly and that protection remains effective.
