Why Is the Power Not Working in My Shed?
A dead outbuilding can be caused at the house, along the cable or inside the shed. Treat the supply as energised until safe isolation is proved.

01 / THE SHORT VERSION
An outbuilding supply has several protection and isolation points
A house-side fused spur or breaker, the outdoor cable, an outbuilding consumer unit or a connected load may have failed or tripped. Water and cable damage are common, but the fault must be located before anything is reset repeatedly.
Switches at the shed do not prove the supply cable is dead; isolation and proving dead must account for the complete arrangement and any generation sources.
02 / READ THE PATTERN
Outside circuits fail where water and joints meet
Outdoor accessories, buried or clipped cables, pond equipment and shed supplies face moisture, impact, corrosion and temperature changes. A fault that appears after rain is valuable evidence, but drying out does not count as a repair.
House protection has tripped
Separate the outbuilding feed from its loads.
Shed RCD only has tripped
A local circuit or appliance may be involved.
Fault followed digging or fencing
Treat possible cable damage as urgent.

Common causes worth testing—not guessing
These are possibilities that fit the symptom, not a remote diagnosis. More than one condition can exist at the same time.

Failed seals, unsuitable enclosures and condensation can create leakage and corrosion.

Pond pumps, lighting transformers, heaters and garden equipment can develop earth leakage.

Outdoor faults commonly operate residual-current protection shared with other parts of the property.

A corroded or loose connection
Moisture and poor terminations can leave a socket, lighting run or outbuilding without supply.

What you can check without opening electrics
The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.
Keep wet equipment off
Do not touch, unplug or reset equipment while it or the surrounding area is wet.
Use normal isolators only
Switch off outdoor lighting, pumps or shed supplies using accessible dry controls; do not open enclosures.
Note the weather and sequence
Record whether the fault followed rain, gardening, a new fitting or one particular item switching on.
Check the house protection once
Observe the relevant RCD or RCBO. Do not repeatedly reset it while the outdoor circuit remains connected.
Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.
05 / USEFUL CLUES
What the timing and location can suggest
A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.
06 / DO NOT WAIT
When this becomes an urgent warning
Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:
- Water inside electrical equipment or an enclosure
- Damaged, exposed or severed outdoor cable
- Burning smell, heat, arcing or melted plastic
- Shock or tingling from outdoor equipment or metalwork
- A supply cable damaged by digging, cutting or impact
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.

How a qualified electrician finds the cause
Good fault finding divides the installation into smaller testable sections and follows evidence. Parts are replaced only after the likely cause has been demonstrated.
Divide the installation
Separate the outdoor run, branches and connected equipment to identify which section owns the fault.
Inspect environmental protection
Check enclosure condition, entries, drainage, joints and suitability for the location.
Test cables and equipment
Use insulation resistance, continuity and protective-device tests appropriate to the arrangement.
Repair for the environment
Replace damaged parts with suitable equipment and verify earthing, sealing and operation before energising.

Why is the house fine but the shed dead?
