Why Does a Socket or Switch Feel Hot?
Slight warmth at some dimmers can be design-related, but a hot socket, plug, ordinary switch or surrounding wall is not something to monitor casually.

Heat means current may be meeting resistance where it should not
Loose terminals, worn contacts, overloaded adapters or damaged conductors can generate heat. Stop using the accessory. If it is too hot to touch, discoloured, buzzing or smells, isolate the circuit or main supply if safe and arrange urgent repair.
Do not cool an electrical accessory with water and do not continue using one half of a double socket.

Heat and noise are warnings of energy being lost in the wrong place
A loose or damaged connection can arc or develop resistance. Instead of delivering useful power, it produces heat at a terminal, contact or conductor. Continued use can carbonise insulation, melt accessories and increase fire risk.
Only the plug is hot
The plug, fuse, flex or pin contact may be involved.
Wall warms around socket
Heat may be spreading from concealed damage.
Dimmer is mildly warm
Check manufacturer limits; hot, noisy or smelly is not normal.
Sockets are not tiny radiators. If one is doing an impression of one, retire it from service.

Insufficient contact pressure creates resistance and heat, especially under sustained or high load.

Damaged contacts can buzz, arc and overheat even when conductors are correctly terminated.

High loads and poor-quality multiway adapters can overheat plugs and socket contacts.

Strands cut during installation or heat-damaged copper can leave too little effective conductor area.

A failing protective-device connection
Heat around a consumer unit can come from a termination, busbar interface or device fault and needs urgent competent attention.

What you can check without opening electrics
The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.
Stop using the affected point
Switch off the load using its normal control and unplug only if the plug is cool, dry and safe to touch.
Keep people away
Do not press, wiggle or repeatedly test an accessory that is hot, buzzing or scorched.
Isolate if it is safe
Use the normal circuit or main switch only when you can do so without approaching smoke, arcing or damaged equipment.
Call promptly
Treat active heat, smell, crackling or consumer-unit noise as an urgent fault, not a future maintenance item.
Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.

What the timing and location can suggest
A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.
06 / DO NOT WAIT
When this becomes an urgent warning
Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:
- Any smoke, visible arcing or crackling
- Plastic that is hot, soft, melted or discoloured
- A burning or fishy electrical smell
- Buzzing at the consumer unit, meter or main switch
- Power fluctuation, shock or tingling alongside the heat symptom
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.

Good fault finding divides the installation into smaller testable sections and follows evidence. Parts are replaced only after the likely cause has been demonstrated.
Identify the heat source
Inspect the load, accessory, conductor and upstream protection without re-energising damaged equipment unnecessarily.

Remove heat-damaged material as required and confirm enough sound conductor remains for a compliant repair.
Correct the connection
Replace damaged accessories and terminate conductors to the manufacturer’s requirements.
Test before return to service
Verify polarity, continuity, insulation and protective measures, then confirm stable operation under load.

Is it normal for a plug to get warm?
