Why Am I Getting Strange Voltage at Sockets?
A strange number on a tester is not a diagnosis. The instrument, reference point, loading and circuit condition all affect what that number means.

A loose or open neutral, high-resistance connection, induced voltage or unsuitable test instrument can produce unexpected readings. If appliances are weak, lights change brightness or several circuits are affected, treat it as a potentially serious connection or supply fault.
Do not probe sockets, consumer units or conductors unless qualified and equipped for safe voltage testing.

Dimming and strange voltages can point to a poor connection
A loose or high-resistance neutral can make voltages move as loads change. If several circuits are affected, the problem may be around the intake, meter, isolator or consumer unit and can damage equipment or overheat. This is an urgent diagnostic job, not a DIY measurement exercise.

What you can check without opening electrics
The aim is to give a qualified electrician useful evidence, not to turn a customer into a live-fault investigator.
Reduce electrical load
Turn off large appliances using normal controls if lights are changing brightness or equipment is behaving abnormally.
Compare affected areas
Note whether the symptom involves one socket, one circuit or several unrelated circuits.
Look and listen from a distance
Buzzing, heat, discolouration or smell at the intake or consumer unit means stop and seek urgent help.
Protect sensitive equipment
Switch off and unplug valuable electronics where it is safe and the plugs and sockets appear normal.
Stop at the cover: no socket faceplates, consumer-unit covers, light fittings, isolators or appliance panels should be opened unless you are competent, equipped and able to isolate and prove dead correctly.

What the timing and location can suggest
A clue narrows the test plan; it does not prove the cause. Equipment can behave differently on another circuit while still carrying a fault.
06 / DO NOT WAIT
When this becomes an urgent warning
Keep the affected circuit or equipment off, if it is safe to operate the normal switch, and seek urgent help when you notice:
- Lights become unusually bright as well as dim
- Burning smell, heat, buzzing or discolouration near the intake or consumer unit
- Several circuits or appliances behave abnormally together
- Visible arcing, smoke or melted insulation
- Shock or tingling from appliances or metalwork
If there is smoke or fire, get everyone to safety and call 999. Do not touch wet or damaged electrical equipment. Suspected faults around the meter, service head or incoming supply may also require the electricity network or metering operator.
