Dense walls divide the radio space
Brick, concrete, metal-backed insulation, mirrors and underfloor systems can reduce or redirect signal between rooms and floors.
Floor area alone cannot answer the question. A long terrace, dense Victorian conversion and open-plan house can need different designs even when their square metres are similar.

Count coverage zones, not just floors
Many ordinary homes need more than the provider router but fewer access points than a room-by-room design. The correct count comes from property construction, floor shape, device demand and usable wired positions. More access points can create interference if channels and power are not planned.

A practical decision guide
The objective is consistent usable service, not the largest equipment count.
One may work when
A sensibly positioned access point can cover a smaller flat or open home if construction and neighbouring interference are favourable.
Two may work when
Separate positions can serve front and rear or upper and lower areas without forcing one radio through every obstruction.
More may be needed when
Large homes, basements, lofts and garden offices may need additional wired access points, but each should have a defined coverage role.
Do not overbuild
Poor channel reuse and excessive transmit power can make roaming and interference worse. Commissioning matters after the count is chosen.

Access-point quantity is a design output rather than the first input.
Separate provider speed or stability problems from coverage inside the property.
Prioritise work areas, bedrooms, media spaces and connected equipment rather than corridors alone.
Identify dense boundaries and practical wired positions on each required coverage zone.
Configure access points as one system rather than several unrelated routers.
Check real device performance, roaming and weak areas, then tune power or channel choices if required.

A finished installation should show usable service in the agreed rooms and explain any limit imposed by the broadband connection or property.

Not automatically. Some floors can share coverage, while dense construction or an offset layout may require more than one zone. A survey should consider the building rather than apply a floor-count rule.
No. Overlapping radios on poorly chosen channels or excessive power can create interference and roaming problems. Each access point should have a defined role and be commissioned as part of one system.
A wired backhaul is normally the predictable choice for permanent access points because it does not consume wireless airtime between nodes. Wireless mesh can still be useful where a suitable cable route is impractical.
It can improve the connection between the device and the home network, but it cannot increase the service arriving from the provider. Test the incoming connection separately.
