Do You Need a
Smart Home Hub?

Not always. A Shelly control, Philips Hue lighting system, Aqara sensor setup or smart thermostat can solve a focused job through its own controls. A central platform becomes worthwhile when several systems need to cooperate, share logic or appear in one clear place.

Choose the job before choosing the hub

The short answer, before the detail

Use the smallest system that delivers the household outcome and keeps ordinary control clear. One compatible standalone device may need no separate hub. A group of bulbs or sensors may work best through its manufacturer bridge. A familiar consumer ecosystem can bring selected Matter and bridged products into one app. Home Assistant is most useful when several brands need richer coordination, local logic, shared dashboards or detailed monitoring—and the household accepts the extra maintenance that flexibility brings.

  • A hub is a means of connecting or coordinating devices, not the customer outcome.
  • Native controls can be the cleanest answer for one focused system.
  • Matter improves interoperability but does not make every feature or platform identical.
  • More integration also means more accounts, updates, dependencies and recovery work.

Start with the property, not the product

Four questions that decide the right level

The decision is less about how many smart products exist and more about what must work, which systems need to cooperate and who will look after them.

A practical decision guide

Four sensible levels of smart-home control

These options can overlap. The useful choice is the lowest level that meets the requirement without blocking a sensible future extension.

01 · Standalone device

Use one product and its own controls

A suitable Shelly control, thermostat, plug or other device may provide schedules, local operation or app access without a separate whole-home controller. Exact offline and remote features remain model-specific.

02 · Manufacturer bridge

Use the product family’s intended hub

Philips Hue and many Aqara setups use a bridge or hub to coordinate their own lights, sensors and automations. This can be reliable and easier to support when the requirement stays mostly within one ecosystem.

03 · Consumer ecosystem

Bring compatible products into a familiar app

Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and Matter controllers can provide a shared household interface for supported products. Compatibility does not guarantee that every manufacturer feature will appear in every ecosystem.

04 · Central integration

Use Home Assistant when systems genuinely need to cooperate

A central controller can combine brands, create richer logic, show shared dashboards and retain more local data. It earns that flexibility through careful setup, naming, backups, updates and a clear recovery plan.

What professional work looks like

Build from the outcome to the control system

A survey should prevent both extremes: an isolated gadget that cannot grow with the home, and a large platform installed for a job one good switch could have handled.

  1. 01

    List the household outcomes

Start with useful jobs such as controlling a lighting circuit, improving heating comfort, detecting a leak or coordinating an away routine.

  2. 02

Survey wiring, heating and network conditions

Check switch wiring, neutral availability, equipment compatibility, radio coverage, WiFi, power and maintainable device positions before choosing products.

  3. 03

Choose the smallest suitable control path

Compare direct operation, a manufacturer bridge, a consumer ecosystem and Home Assistant against the real feature and resilience requirement.

  4. 04

    Keep familiar manual control

Agree how wall switches, thermostats, buttons and native apps behave when an automation, hub, internet connection or central controller is unavailable.

  5. 05

    Configure security, updates and ownership

Use the customer’s accounts, limit access, enable supported security controls and record who is responsible for software, batteries and product support.

  6. 06

    Test, explain and hand over

Prove ordinary control, automations and realistic failure behaviour; then leave clear names, app access, bridge details and recovery information.

Experience made visible

Experience at both ends of the complexity scale

Rudi installs focused Shelly, Aqara, Philips Hue and smart-heating controls as well as multi-brand Home Assistant systems. His own 46-automation installation provides deep integration experience; it is evidence of what can be coordinated, not a prescription for every customer.

  • Standalone relay and lighting controls selected around the existing circuit.
  • Aqara sensors and buttons assigned to specific household outcomes.
  • Philips Hue scenes retained through the manufacturer bridge where useful.
  • Compatible smart-heating controls integrated without removing the normal thermostat route.
  • Home Assistant used only where cross-brand logic, dashboards or monitoring add value.
  • Accounts, manual fallback and recovery explained at handover.

Sources and scope

This guide explains the practical issues customers ask about. Regulations and official guidance can change, and the correct solution still depends on the property. The following primary sources were checked when this page was prepared:

Smart Home Installation Questions

Straight answers to the questions customers ask before arranging a survey or inspection.

Do all smart devices need a hub?

No. Some products connect directly to WiFi, use a local web interface or operate through their own app. Others use a manufacturer bridge, Matter controller or another hub. Check the exact device and required features rather than deciding from the product category alone.

Can Shelly devices work without Home Assistant?

Yes. Compatible Shelly devices can be configured and controlled through Shelly’s own app, and supported models provide a local web interface on the same network. Home Assistant is optional when cross-brand integration or central automation adds value.

Do Aqara devices need an Aqara hub?

Many Aqara Zigbee accessories are designed to connect through an Aqara hub. Newer Matter and Thread routes can differ, and support varies by product and ecosystem. The exact sensor, controller and feature set should be checked together.

Do Philips Hue lights need the Hue Bridge?

Not for every small lighting setup. Some Hue products offer more limited direct control, while the Hue Bridge adds the fuller Zigbee-based lighting system, automations, remote features and integrations. Choose it when those capabilities justify another bridge.

Can a smart thermostat work as a standalone system?

Yes. Many smart-heating products provide their own thermostat, schedules and manufacturer app without Home Assistant. Boiler, heat-pump, underfloor-heating and wiring compatibility must still be confirmed for the exact property.

Is Matter the same as a smart home hub?

No. Matter is an interoperability standard for compatible products. A Matter controller, and sometimes a Thread border router or manufacturer bridge, can still be needed. Matter support also does not guarantee that every advanced manufacturer feature is exposed in every app.

When is Home Assistant worth installing?

It becomes valuable when several brands need to share triggers and actions, when local dashboards or detailed history matter, or when the household wants more control over automation and data. That flexibility should be balanced against setup, updates, backups and ongoing maintenance.

What happens if the internet or hub stops working?

It depends on the chosen control path. Some local switches, schedules and bridge automations can continue; cloud commands and remote access may pause; controller-dependent routines can stop. Required physical and native fallback should be agreed and tested rather than assumed.
