Smart lighting should still feel like lighting
Use a smart switch or correctly selected in-wall relay where the whole circuit needs dependable, familiar control. Use smart bulbs where individual lamp colour, colour temperature or scene control adds a real benefit. A mixed design is often better than forcing one product type everywhere, but the switch behaviour, neutral availability, lamp compatibility and failure state must be agreed before installation.
Start with the property, not the product
A pendant, a bank of downlights, a table lamp and garden lighting do not need the same smart layer. The circuit and the household routine come first.

Smart switch
It can provide a normal wall interface and connected status, subject to the wiring arrangement, load and exact model. Dimming and neutral requirements must be checked.
In-wall relay
A relay can sit behind a suitable switch or in an accessible enclosure and expose circuit control to Home Assistant. Space, heat, wiring and maintenance access still matter.
Smart bulb
Colour, tunable white and lamp-by-lamp scenes are the real reasons to choose it. The design must prevent well-meaning fingers from isolating it permanently at the wall.
Mixed system
Fixed circuits can retain robust switch control while selected decorative lamps use smart bulbs. Home Assistant can present both together without pretending they are electrically identical.

A useful lighting design is tested at the wall, in Home Assistant and during a dependency failure—not only from the installer’s phone.
Confirm the fittings, load, switch positions, neutral availability, multi-way arrangements and any existing dimming.
Define what a single press, hold or second switch should do for the people who use the room.
Choose switch, relay, dimmer, bulb or a mixed arrangement from the required function and exact compatibility.
Add a small number of recognisable scenes, timers or occupancy responses instead of turning every possible state into a button.
Check manual operation, Home Assistant control, restart behaviour and what happens when the controller or internet is unavailable.
Explain which devices need permanent power, which controls are direct and how to regain ordinary operation.
